Diminishing Resistance to Taking Action

A recent workshop that I facilitated brought up an easy technique to use to overcome procrastination in taking action. The technique is simple – count to 10 and before you finish your countdown commit to taking an action step.

It is a simple process, and it does require a bit of pre-work of your part. To begin with you must decide on an objective. Write a sentence for your next blog post, put on your sneakers for your exercise routine, set up your workspace to facilitate writing or studying, or doing research.  Whatever the objective is – having clarity about the action sets you up to actually do it. In the time frame it takes to count to ten you are not allowing the opportunity to overthink and talk yourself out of doing that step that moves the needle forward on the objective you set earlier.

By using this technique you can actually complete a host of tasks throughout your day.  You may be surprised at what you are able to accomplish when you begin a countdown and start to do what you have stated as a priority before the countdown is over.

The end of procrastination is in sight using this method. Simple – easy to do – no equipment required. Why not go for it. The only thing you have to lose is the 10 seconds you have used up.
